What is IST to UTC?

India Standard Time is the local clock in India. Converting it to UTC removes the local offset so the time can be shared with anyone in the world without ambiguity — which is exactly why UTC is used for servers, aviation and international scheduling.

India Standard Time covers the whole country from a single meridian near Mirzapur (82.5° E), which is why the offset lands on a half hour rather than a full hour.

How to convert IST to UTC

Subtract the current offset shown in the offset panel from the local IST time. If the result goes below 00:00, UTC is still on the previous date. Use the roller to read the pairing directly instead of doing the arithmetic.

IST has no daylight saving changes, so the offset to UTC is stable all year. It is still calculated live from the Asia/Kolkata IANA database rather than hard-coded.

When IST and UTC fall on different dates

Early-morning or late-night local times frequently sit on a different UTC date. The converter labels every selection as SAME DAY, NEXT DAY or PREVIOUS DAY so a deadline written in UTC is never off by 24 hours.

Does IST change for daylight saving time?

India does not use daylight saving time. IST stays at UTC +05:30 every day of the year, so a conversion you learn in January still works in July.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert IST to UTC quickly?
Read the live offset above and subtract it from your local time — or scroll the roller until the IST drum shows the time you care about and read the UTC drum beside it.
Why do developers store timestamps in UTC?
UTC has no daylight saving jumps and no regional variation, so a UTC timestamp means the same instant everywhere. Local time is applied only when the value is displayed.
Is IST the same all year?
Yes — India does not use daylight saving time, so the offset from UTC is constant.
