Coordinated Universal Time is the primary time standard the world sets its clocks by. It is maintained by atomic clocks, kept close to solar time with occasional leap seconds, and never shifts for daylight saving.
Aviation, shipping, computing and science all use UTC so that one instant has one unambiguous name, whatever the local clock says.
Every time zone is expressed as an offset from UTC, from UTC -12:00 to UTC +14:00. Pick a country above and the converter shows the live offset, the local clock and whether the two zones are currently on the same date.
They read the same, but they are different things: GMT is a time zone based on the Greenwich meridian, while UTC is a technical standard. The UK leaves GMT for British Summer Time each spring; UTC never moves.
